Normalising the challenging phases of awakening and offering compassionate guidance
There comes a point on the path where the light doesn’t feel like light at all.
It feels like everything is falling apart.
The beliefs that once held you steady begin to unravel. The identity you built starts to feel unfamiliar. Relationships shift. Motivation dips. Emotions rise without invitation. There can be grief without a clear cause, exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix, and a quiet sense that something deeper is moving beneath it all.
This is often described as a dark night of the soul.
A moment of redirection. A deeper alignment point. A threshold.

What is a Dark Night of the Soul?
The term originates from the writings of St. John of the Cross, who described a profound spiritual crisis where the old self dissolves so that a more aligned, truthful self can emerge.
In modern language, it sits at the intersection of spiritual awakening and mental health.
It can look like:
- Loss of meaning or direction
- Emotional heaviness or numbness
- Anxiety or existential questioning
- Withdrawal from people or environments that once felt normal
- A deep urge to seek truth beyond surface-level answers
From the outside, it can resemble depression or burnout. From the inside, it often feels like a stripping back to something raw and real.
Why It Happens
Awakening is not just expansion. It is also deconstruction.
Before clarity comes, there is often a clearing. Before alignment, there is exposure.
The nervous system, the psyche, and the body all begin recalibrating. Old patterns rise to be seen. Unprocessed emotions surface. Conditioned beliefs loosen their grip.
It is less like “ascending” and more like descending into your own depths to retrieve what has been hidden.
Your system is not breaking. It is reorganising.

The Mental Health Lens
This is where grounding becomes essential.
Not every dark phase is purely spiritual. And not every struggle should be romanticised as awakening.
There is real overlap between:
- Spiritual crisis
- Trauma activation
- Anxiety disorders
- Depression
Understanding this distinction matters.
If symptoms include persistent inability to function, thoughts of self-harm, severe disconnection, or overwhelming distress, support is not optional. It is necessary.
Working with qualified mental health professionals alongside your spiritual exploration creates stability and safety.
This is not about choosing one lens over the other. It is about integration.

What Helps During This Phase
This is not a phase that responds well to force.
It responds to presence, patience, and honesty.
1. Ground the Body
When everything feels abstract or overwhelming, return to the physical.
Walk. Breathe. Eat nourishing food. Touch the earth. Slow, steady routines help regulate the nervous system and create a sense of safety.
2. Reduce the Noise
Information overload can intensify confusion.
You do not need ten different teachings, five modalities, and constant input. Choose simplicity. Let insight land before seeking more.
3. Feel Without Analysing Everything
Not every emotion needs to be solved.
Some need to be experienced, moved through, and released. Let the body process what the mind cannot yet understand.
4. Stay Connected to Safe People
Isolation can deepen the spiral.
You do not need everyone to understand your experience, but having even one grounded, supportive person matters.
5. Seek Professional Support When Needed
Therapists, counsellors, and support workers exist for a reason.
There is strength in recognising when you need structured support. Especially during intense phases.
6. Let Identity Soften
You are not required to know exactly who you are becoming.
This phase often dismantles rigid identity structures. Allow space for something more authentic to emerge rather than trying to rebuild the old version of yourself.
A Different Way to See It
Instead of asking:
“What is wrong with me?”
Try:
“What is being shown to me?”
“What is no longer aligned?”
“What am I being asked to release?”
The dark night is not here to punish. It is here to reveal.
It clears illusion. It exposes truth. It asks for honesty.
And it does not rush.

The Integration Phase
Eventually, something shifts.
Not in a dramatic, cinematic moment. More like a quiet settling.
The same world, but you relate to it differently.
There is more discernment. More awareness. More capacity to hold complexity without needing immediate answers.
The light returns, but it is not the same light as before.
It is steadier. Less dependent on external validation. More rooted in lived experience.

My Thoughts
Awakening is not all clarity and expansion.
It includes contraction, confusion, and deep internal work.
Normalising this matters, because many people go through it silently, believing they are alone or that something has gone wrong.
Nothing has gone wrong.
But that does not mean you have to navigate it unsupported.
You are allowed to have both:
Spiritual depth and Practical support
Insight and Structure
Awareness and Care
The path is not about escaping the earthly experience. It is about meeting it more truthfully.
And sometimes, that truth is found in the dark before it is ever recognised in the light.

Returning to the Body: Why Bio-Electric Therapy Matters in This Phase
When you move through a dark night of the soul, so much of the experience happens internally.
Thoughts shift. Emotions rise. Identity softens.
But beneath all of that, the body is carrying the load.
The nervous system is recalibrating. The fascia holds patterns of tension and release. The energetic and electrical communication within the body can become disrupted as old layers surface and move.
This is where Bio-Electric Therapy becomes a powerful support.
Rather than trying to think your way through the experience, this work brings you back into direct connection with your body.
Through the gentle transmission of a mild electrical current, the body is supported to:
- Regulate the nervous system
- Restore flow through connective tissue and meridian pathways
- Reduce inflammation and stagnation held in the tissues
- Support detoxification and release at a cellular level
- Create a deeply meditative state where the body can unwind naturally
During a dark night phase, this matters.
Because the process is not just mental or spiritual. It is physiological.
When the body feels safe, the mind begins to settle.
When the system slows down, clarity can return.
When flow is restored, what felt stuck can begin to move.
Bio-Electric Therapy doesn’t force change.
It creates the conditions for the body to rebalance itself.
For many, this becomes a grounding anchor. A place where the intensity softens, the noise quiets, and the system is given space to integrate what is unfolding.
Integration Through the Body
Awakening is not about leaving the body behind.
It is about becoming more fully present within it.
Supporting the body during these phases allows the process to move with greater ease, rather than resistance.
It becomes less about pushing through, and more about allowing the system to reorganise in a way that is sustainable and embodied.
