Last year I attended the Free Speech Summit on the Gold Coast where I was interviewed by John Safran for his SBS documentary Shut Your Big Fat Mouth John Safran.
John Safran is well known in Australia as a provocateur and satirist who explores controversial cultural, political, and social issues through documentary filmmaking. Throughout the summit he interviewed a wide range of speakers and attendees with very different perspectives on free speech, censorship, government, media, bodily autonomy, and the changing direction of Australian society.
During my interview, I spoke about concerns surrounding politicians creating laws that increasingly impact freedom of speech, online expression, bodily autonomy, and the rights of everyday Australians.
At one point I also demonstrated Bio-Electric Therapy on John himself, which made for a fairly surreal and humorous moment during filming.
At the summit I delivered my speech titled The Courtroom Monopoly: A Game We Never Agreed to Play, where I discussed my experiences navigating the legal system as a self-represented litigant and my concerns regarding procedural complexity, access to justice, institutional power, and the growing disconnect many ordinary Australians feel from the systems governing their lives.
While John Safran’s style is often provocative, satirical, and intentionally uncomfortable, I found him to be intelligent, curious, humorous, and genuinely willing to engage with people from many different backgrounds and perspectives.
The documentary captures a very unusual moment in Australian culture where conversations around censorship, public trust, media, online speech, bodily autonomy, and freedom have become increasingly polarised.
I have edited and shared portions of the documentary relevant to my own interview and experience at the summit and encourage people to watch the full SBS documentary and come to their own conclusions.
