Pain does not end when it is understood.
It changes when the body feels safe enough to let go.
Where The Journey of Pain explores how pain develops, this page focuses on what allows pain to soften, re-organise, and resolve when its root cause is addressed.
How Pain Progresses Through the System
I often explain pain using the states of water because it provides a clear and practical way to understand how pain develops over time.

Mental Level – Steam
Pain often begins as mental pressure. This may present as chronic stress, overthinking, worry, or a constant sense of being “on edge.” Like steam, this form of pain is diffuse and not always easy to identify, yet it increases internal pressure and activates the nervous system. When mental load remains high for extended periods, the body stays in a heightened state of alert.

Emotional Level – Water
When mental strain persists, it frequently moves into the emotional body. Emotional pain is fluid and responsive. It may show up as fatigue, heaviness, tension, or discomfort that fluctuates with mood, relationships, or life circumstances. When emotions are not able to process or resolve, the body adapts by holding them.

Physical Level – Ice
Over time, unresolved mental and emotional strain can solidify into physical pain. This is where pain becomes localised, persistent, and structural, affecting muscles, joints, nerves, or connective tissue. Physical pain is often the final stage of a longer adaptive process rather than the original cause.
This progression does not mean pain is imagined or psychological.
It means pain has layers, and the physical body is often where it finally becomes visible.
Pain as Protection
Pain is not a malfunction.
Pain is a protective response.
When the nervous system perceives ongoing threat, overload, or imbalance, pain can act as a boundary. It slows the body down and draws attention to what needs support.
In this way, pain is not working against you.
It is working to support regulation and survival.
Why Pain Can Persist
Pain may continue even when scans are clear or an injury has healed because the system has not yet returned to a regulated, balanced state.
This can occur when:
- The nervous system remains in protection mode
- Emotional stress is still being held in the body
- Mental load has not reduced
- The body has adapted for too long without adequate support
In these cases, pain is maintained by pattern rather than damage.
A Holistic Approach to Pain
As a holistic practitioner, I work with the understanding that pain must be addressed at the level at which it is being held.
This means working across:
- The physical body
- The emotional landscape
- Mental and nervous system patterns
Rather than following a fixed protocol, I draw on a range of tools and techniques, guided by intuition, experience, and what presents during each session.
What to Expect at the Bio-Electric Therapy Clinic in Midland
My Bio-Electric Therapy clinic in Midland is a space designed for assessment, regulation, and restoration. While the intention of each session is always to support pain resolution and balance, no two sessions are ever the same.
This is because pain does not always present in the same state.
Some clients arrive with pain that feels diffuse and pressurised, like steam.
Others experience pain that is emotional and fluid.
And some arrive with pain that has frozen into the physical body.
Each session is guided by identifying how pain is currently expressing itself and responding accordingly.
Session Formats May Include
Some sessions may begin with a bio scan report, which offers insight into functional stress patterns within the body. This information helps guide where the system is under load and where support may be most effective.
In other cases, I may use the ABMMA bio-electric therapy machine during a seated session. This approach allows us to explore additional pathways of support, particularly when pain is influenced by nervous system patterns, emotional holding, or energetic imbalance. These sessions may also integrate:
- Acupressure
- Inner Compass counselling and guided inquiry
- Nervous system regulation techniques
Other sessions are conducted entirely on the massage table.

When pain is persistent, deeply held, or when the mind needs rest, the focus may be on complete relaxation and nervous system down-regulation. These sessions allow the body to settle, soften, and release without active engagement.
Some sessions are more interactive.
Others are quiet and restorative.
What remains consistent is that each session responds to the state of the pain, not a predetermined method.
Understanding pain is the beginning.
Transformation is what follows.
As the system returns to regulation and coherence, pain no longer needs to hold its form. The body remembers how to settle, adapt, and restore itself.
