Over the past few days Western Australians have been watching fuel prices surge while petrol stations begin to limit diesel sales.

According to reports, wholesalers are rationing fuel supply, with some regional towns restricting fuel purchases to emergency services only. The explanation being offered is the war in the Middle East and the disruption to international fuel markets.

Almost instantly, something very familiar began to happen.

People started filling jerry cans.

Cars lined up at petrol stations.

Social media filled with warnings to “fill up now”.

And within hours the quiet whisper of uncertainty had turned into the loud drumbeat of panic buying.

We have seen this movie before.

During COVID, something almost comical and yet strangely revealing happened. Supermarket shelves were stripped bare of toilet paper. Entire aisles were emptied overnight as people rushed to secure their share.

The shortage wasn’t caused by a lack of toilet paper production.

It was caused by fear.

Fear changes behaviour faster than facts ever can.

When people believe something might run out, the instinct to secure resources kicks in. One person buying extra creates the impression of scarcity, which prompts another person to do the same, and suddenly a self-fulfilling cycle is born.

Scarcity creates urgency.
Urgency creates panic.
Panic creates empty shelves.

History shows this pattern repeating again and again.

During the Second World War fuel was rationed across Australia. Citizens were issued ration books and could only purchase limited amounts of petrol. It was a national effort designed to conserve resources during wartime.

But that was a time of international war and national mobilisation.

What we are seeing today is something different.

Markets fluctuate. Supply chains tighten. Prices rise and fall. News headlines amplify uncertainty.

In the middle of all that noise, the human mind does something very predictable.

It projects the present moment into the future.

If fuel is scarce today, we imagine it will be scarce tomorrow.
If prices rise today, we imagine they will keep rising forever.

But the truth is much simpler.

Most disruptions are temporary.

Supply chains adjust.
Markets rebalance.
Production increases.
Life moves forward.

The storm passes.

The phrase “this too shall pass” has been repeated across centuries because it captures something deeply true about life.

Moments of stress feel permanent while we are inside them.

But they rarely are.

When fear begins to spread, the most powerful response is often the simplest one.

Pause.

Take a breath.

Step back from the emotional reaction and engage the rational mind.

Scarcity thinking pulls us into survival mode.
Clarity brings us back into balance.

And in a world that often runs on anxiety and urgency, calm thinking can be a surprisingly radical act.

Because just like the toilet paper panic of 2020, just like countless moments of uncertainty before it…

This too shall pass.

Finding Calm in Uncertain Times

Moments like this reveal something important about human nature.

When uncertainty rises, so does stress. Our nervous system shifts into survival mode. Thoughts race. The body tightens. We react instead of responding.

The truth is that stress doesn’t just live in the mind. It lives in the body.

When the nervous system is constantly on alert, digestion suffers, sleep becomes disrupted, and our ability to think clearly diminishes. Over time, this creates the perfect environment for burnout, anxiety, and physical imbalance.

This is where restoring balance becomes essential.

Through Bio-Electric Therapy and intuitive root-cause work, I help people calm the nervous system, release stored stress in the body, and restore healthy energy flow. When the body relaxes, the mind naturally follows.

Clarity replaces panic.
Calm replaces fear.

If you are feeling overwhelmed by the current climate, this may be the perfect time to pause, reset, and reconnect with your inner balance.
